Practical Guidelines for Placement of Tyvek Clean Steam Bag During Sterilization

详情2.jpg

Tyvek Clean Steam Bag is constructed of 1073B Tyvek and HDPE film. The Tyvek side features tiny pores that allow water vapor to pass through while blocking microorganisms. It achieves highly efficient barrier against bacteria, fungi and other microorganisms via dual mechanisms: physical interception and interfacial repulsion. This selective permeability ensures unobstructed gas exchange and maintains the integrity of the biological barrier.

Anyone working with medical packaging sterilization knows this common issue: even with correct parameters and cycles, Tyvek Clean Steam Bags often suffer from water accumulation, insufficient penetration and poor drying performance. In fact, most failures are not caused by defective bags, but improper loading placement during daily operation. Today we break down the most frequent industry pitfalls and correct practices to avoid repeated rework.

 Common Placement Methods

1. Tyvek side facing up

2. Tyvek side facing down

3. Vertical placement

Placement Method Advantages Disadvantages

1. Tyvek side facing up

Advantages: Good steam penetration performance.

Disadvantages: The bottom is non-breathable plastic film. Condensate formed in sterilization cannot drain by gravity and causes water accumulation, which may lead to poor drying results after sterilization.

2. Tyvek side facing down

Advantages: The breathable Tyvek layer is at the bottom. Sterilization condensate can pass through under gravity, so better drying performance can be obtained after sterilization.

Disadvantages: Steam penetration may be inadequate. The Tyvek side is hydrophilic. Accumulated condensate may block the micropores and affect steam penetration.

3. Vertical placement

Advantages: No risk of condensate accumulation.

Disadvantages: Low space utilization, and brackets are needed.

Guideline for Placement Selection

1. Stoppers & silicone tubes

Recommended placement: Lay flat with the Tyvek side facing down for good drying performance.

(Steam penetration shall be monitored during validation.)

2. Small items

Recommended placement: Any orientation.

3. Large items

Recommended placement: Tyvek side facing down.

(Refers to the Tyvek layer)

4. Cleanroom garments

Recommended placement: Vertical placement.

5. General items

Recommended placement: Tyvek side facing up.

(Refers to the Tyvek layer)

6. Cleanroom wipes

Recommended placement: Any orientation.

Why Does DuPont™ Tyvek® Become the Industry Benchmark for Pharmaceutical Sterile Packaging?

3. How Do Tyvek® Breath Bags Maintain End-to-End Sterility of Pharmaceutical Products?

In pharmaceutical manufacturing, Tyvek® clean steam bags are applied across key stages from sterilization to product delivery, building solid sterile protection via elaborate design.

Breathable protector during sterilization

During sterilization, steam penetrates the micro-pores of Tyvek® to fully sterilize drugs and pharmaceutical consumables. After sterilization, moisture inside pouches can be rapidly released through the material. This prevents product dampness, deterioration and secondary contamination caused by condensed water residue, ensuring valid sterilization results.

Sterile shield for transport and storage

Once sterilization is completed, the material delivers reliable microbial barrier performance. It effectively blocks dust and microorganisms from the external environment. The products remain under sterile protection throughout the whole chain from cleanroom and warehouse to end use, fully meeting the strict sterile control requirements of the latest GMP.

Reduction of cross-contamination risks

For the transfer of components and devices in sterile drug manufacturing, the individual packaging design of Tyvek® breath bags effectively prevents cross-contamination between different batches and different products. It standardizes production workflows and supports manufacturers to achieve compliant production.

1. Why is the pharmaceutical industry so rigorous about packaging materials?

The latest GMP specifications set clear and stringent requirements for the packaging and transfer of sterile pharmaceutical products. Packaging materials must withstand sterilization processes, effectively block microbial ingress, and meanwhile allow gas exchange to prevent pressure differentials inside pouches during sterilization, which may damage products or the packaging itself.

Conventional packaging materials often fail to balance these needs. Some are non-breathable and leave residual moisture inside pouches after sterilization; others have inadequate barrier performance and cannot block external microorganisms. DuPont™ Tyvek® is an all-round material developed to resolve this conflict, precisely meeting the stringent requirements of the pharmaceutical industry for packaging materials.

2. What Makes DuPont™ Tyvek® Such a High-performance Material?

Tyvek® is a high-density polyethylene nonwoven material manufactured by DuPont via the unique flash-spun technology. It combines the advantages of paper, film and fabric to meet core requirements of pharmaceutical sterile packaging.

It has controlled breathability: steam and gas can pass through freely to balance internal and external pressure during sterilization and prevent pouch expansion or rupture, while blocking bacteria and fungi to form a sterile barrier.

It features robust physical properties: lightweight, tear-resistant and puncture-resistant, minimizing packaging damage and contamination risks during transportation and sterilization.

It is compatible with multiple sterilization methods including EO, steam and gamma irradiation. It will not degrade or generate harmful substances after sterilization, complying with pharmaceutical compliance requirements.

It has low particle shedding. Its smooth surface reduces fiber debris and prevents secondary particulate contamination for drugs and devices, meeting cleanroom standards for sterile drug manufacturing.
