Camo Caps: What to Settle Before the Fabric Is Ordered

Woodland camo cap and beanie with cotton twill camo fabric swatch showing leafy pattern and blaze orange patch
Camo reads as one product and behaves as at least four. Pattern family, print route, fibre and licence are separate decisions, and the last one can stop an order after the fabric has already been paid for.Pattern first. Woodland is leafy and forgiving, and it holds up even when a seam does not align. Digital patterns depend on print resolution - a coarse screen turns the pixels into noise. Grass and reed patterns are vertical, so the reeds have to run up the panel and cutting must keep grain and print direction together. Blaze orange is not camouflage at all; it is a visibility requirement that differs by state and country, and confirming it is the buyer's job, not the factory's.Route second. Cotton twill printed in the roll by rotary screen gives the softest hand but carries a screen cost per colour. Polyester sublimation has no screen cost and no colour limit, but each panel is printed flat, so a continuous motif breaks at every seam. Yarn-dyed weaving is the only route that gives a genuine two-sided result on a beanie or a scarf, and it has the longest minimum.Fastness third. Ask for light fastness to ISO 105-B02 at grade 4 or better, wash fastness to ISO 105-C06 at 4 to 5, and crocking to ISO 105-X12. Then ask the question most buyers skip: ultraviolet brightness. Optical brighteners in detergent and in print paste glow under UV, and game sees further into the ultraviolet than we do. Specify low-UV dyes and test with brightener-free detergent.Licence last, and first in importance. Generic patterns are free to print. Proprietary patterns are registered designs licensed to a brand, almost never to a factory, and the licence carries a territory, a minimum and a per-unit royalty. If you want that look without the licence, commission an original pattern - it costs a design fee and two extra weeks, and the brand owns the result. We print camo on cotton twill by screen and on polyester by sublimation, and we ask for the licence reference before the first run rather than after.
