Product Introduction
Product name: Lithium Niobate (LiNbO3) Crystal
Lithium niobate is a ferroelectric crystal that carries several useful effects at once: piezoelectric, electro-optic, nonlinear optical, photorefractive and acousto-optic. Almost every optical modulator, Q-switch and surface acoustic wave filter in service uses it or one of its doped variants.
Key properties:
The spontaneous polarisation is high, 0.70 C/m2, and the Curie temperature is high for a ferroelectric, so the crystal does not depole in normal device processing. Two things make it versatile: it shows many photoelectric effects in one material, and those properties are highly controllable through composition, doping and valence control. The crystal is available in large high-quality boules, is stable and easy to process, transmits from 0.3 to 5 µm, and has a birefringence of about 0.08 at 633 nm, which makes high-quality optical waveguides straightforward to produce.
That combination is why LiNbO3 devices appear across electronic technology, optical communication and laser technology:
SAW filters, optical and phase modulators, optical isolators, electro-optic Q-switches, integrated optical circuits, image storage, harmonic generation, frequency multipliers, parametric oscillators, 1064 nm frequency doubling and four-wave phase matching devices. Interest has grown again with 5G, micro- and nano-photonics, integrated photonics and quantum optics.
Fabrication and options:
Supplied as boules, crystal rods, blanks and polished wafers up to Ø8" with surface quality 10/5, flatness λ/8 at 632.8 nm, parallelism better than 10′, wavefront distortion below λ/4, chamfer under 0.5 mm at 45°±5°, and an extinction ratio above 400:1 at 633 nm over a 6 mm beam. Optical coating down to R < 0.2% at 1064 nm is available. Degrees of X, Y and Z cut, off-axis and periodically poled wafers can be produced on request. Packed in a Class 100 clean bag inside a Class 1000 clean room.
Ordering:
Minimum order 10 pcs. For modulator and Q-switch work, send the cut, the aperture and the wavelength; coating and poling are quoted together with the wafer.
