Optical, physical and chemical properties are good, hardness is adequate for polishing and handling, and thermal conductivity is high enough for power laser work. In laser systems YAP serves as a gain medium and as optical components such as prisms and lenses, and it holds up in high power and ultraviolet systems. It also works as a scintillation detector material for gamma and X-ray detection in nuclear medicine and particle physics. Doped with rare earth and transition metal ions, YAP covers laser, scintillation, holographic recording, optical data storage and dosimetry work, and it is also used as a substrate for high-temperature superconducting films.
