Seamless steel pipe is widely used in oil and gas transmission, chemical industry, power generation, machinery manufacturing, and other key infrastructure fields due to its excellent mechanical properties, high pressure resistance, and uniform structure. Unlike welded steel pipes, seamless steel pipes are manufactured without welding seams, which greatly improves the safety and reliability of pipelines under harsh working conditions. The production process of seamless steel pipe is a complex and precise metallurgical process, with each step directly determining the quality and service life of the final product.
1.Raw Material Preparation
The production of seamless steel pipe starts with high-quality round steel billets, which are inspected for surface defects, internal inclusions and dimensional accuracy. The billets are then cut to fixed lengths according to production requirements, ensuring consistent material quality from the source.
2.Heating in Rotary Furnace
The cut billets are sent to a rotary heating furnace, where they are evenly heated to a high temperature (usually 1200–1250℃ for carbon steel). This heating process improves the plasticity of the billet, making it suitable for subsequent piercing and rolling operations.
3.Piercing Process
The heated billet is fed into a piercing mill, where it is pierced into a hollow tube shell using the Mannesmann process. The piercing step is the core of seamless pipe production, transforming the solid billet into a hollow tube without any welding seams.
4.Continuous Rolling & Sizing
The hollow tube shell is then rolled in a continuous rolling mill to reduce wall thickness and extend the length, forming a rough pipe. After rolling, the pipe goes through a sizing mill to achieve precise outer diameter and straightness, ensuring dimensional accuracy meets international standards.
5.Heat Treatment
To optimize mechanical properties, seamless steel pipes undergo heat treatment such as normalizing, quenching and tempering, depending on the material grade and application. This process refines the grain structure, improving strength, toughness and corrosion resistance.
6.Finishing & Quality Inspection
The finished pipes are straightened, cut to required lengths, and undergo strict quality control, including ultrasonic testing, eddy current testing, hydrostatic pressure testing and dimensional inspection. Only pipes that pass all inspections are marked, packaged and ready for delivery.
