Tetrahydrothiophene (THT) is a saturated sulfur-containing heterocyclic compound. At room temperature, it is a colorless, transparent liquid with a strong, persistent characteristic odor (similar to rotting onions and sulfur), detectable by the human olfactory sense even at extremely low concentrations (0.01 ppm). Chemically stable, it is not easily decomposed, has low corrosiveness, and leaves little residue after combustion. It is a globally recognized high-quality odorant for fuel gases, widely replacing traditional ethanethiol.

✅ Fuel Gas Odorization (Mainstream): Safety tracer for natural gas, LNG, liquefied petroleum gas, and town gas; added at 20–50 mg/m³, providing a strong odor warning in case of leakage, preventing explosions and poisoning accidents.

✅ Organic Synthesis Intermediate: Used in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, pesticides, dyes, fragrances, and sulfur-containing fine chemicals.
