Intervention of Modified Ketogenic Diet (Ultra-Low Carb Diet) for Alzheimer's Disease
The ketogenic diet improves cognitive impairment and neuroinflammation in a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease (led by Professor Zhu Yingjie, the chief scientist). After four months of the ketogenic diet, the spatial learning, spatial memory, and working memory of 5XFAD mice were improved. The improvement in cognitive function was associated with the recovery of the number of neurons and synapses in the hippocampus and cortex. The ketogenic diet treatment could also reduce the deposition of amyloid plaques and the activation of microglia, thereby reducing neuroinflammation. The positive impact of the ketogenic diet on cognitive function depends on the timing and duration of the diet initiation.
