LECTROSTATIC DISCHARGE
Electrostatic discharge (ESD) is a short but intense flow of electricity when two electronically charged objects come in contact. In a device with a membrane switch interface, this can happen when the user presses down a button. As you can imagine, ESD can damage sensitive circuitry and other components within the device.

SOLUTIONS FOR SHIELDING INTERFERENCE
Not every membrane switch requires shielding for EMI, RFI, or ESD. In some cases, the graphic overlay provides enough of a buffer to protect the internal components. However, for various reasons – including application, environment, regulations, and more – additional shielding is often warranted.

  1. ESD Shielding Membrane:

    • The ESD shielding membrane is a thin, conductive layer that is incorporated into the overall membrane switch assembly.
    • This layer is typically made from a material such as metallized polyester or conductive fabric.
  2. Dissipating Static Electricity:

    • When static electricity builds up on the surface of the membrane switch, the conductive ESD shielding membrane provides a path for the static charge to be safely dissipated.
    • This helps prevent the static electricity from reaching and potentially damaging the sensitive electronic components within the switch assembly.
  3. Grounding the ESD Shielding:

    • The ESD shielding membrane is typically connected to a ground plane or ground trace within the membrane switch assembly.
    • This grounding connection ensures that the static electricity is directed away from the sensitive components and safely discharged.
  4. Enhanced Protection:

    • The ESD shielding membrane provides an additional layer of protection for the membrane switch, complementing other design features that may be in place to mitigate the effects of static electricity.
    • This can include measures such as anti-static coatings, shielding around the switch components, and proper grounding of the overall system.
