1. Properties:

  • Appearance and physical form: Diisobutyl ketone (DIBK) is a transparent, colorless or slightly yellow liquid with a weak ketone odor. Available in various grades (technical ≥98%, high purity ≥99%, pharmaceutical/intermediate).

  • Solubility: DIBK is practically insoluble in water (0.05 g/100 ml at 25°C) and is miscible with ethanol, ether, chloroform, benzene, and most organic solvents. Dissolves cellulose acetate, nitrocellulose, polystyrene, vinyl resins, waxes, drying oils, natural resins, and rubber.

  • Chemical properties: DIBK – a high-boiling ketone solvent with the formula (CH₃)₂CHCH₂C(O)CH₂CH(CH₃)₂. It has a boiling point of 165–170°C, a flash point of 49°C, and an autoignition temperature of 396°C. Vapors are heavier than air (vapor density 4.9) and can form explosive mixtures with air (0.8–6.2% by volume at 100°F). DIBK is chemically stable but reacts with strong oxidizers. Low density, low surface tension and high dilution ratio allow the development of high-hardness coatings with low VOC content. DIBK is a non-HAP solvent.

2. Application:

  • Paints, coatings and printing inks (main): DIBK is widely used as a retarder solvent in nitrocellulose lacquers. Dissolves a wide range of synthetic resins. Used in vinyl, acrylic, alkyd, polyester, and epoxy coating formulations. Used in printing inks, paint removers, wood stains, and leather coatings.

  • Pharmaceutical industry: Used as an extraction solvent and recrystallization aid. Serves as a chemical intermediate in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, inhibitors, dyes, and insecticides.

  • Adhesives, sealants, and leather: Solvent in adhesive formulations and leather coatings.

  • Industrial cleaning: Effective for cleaning and degreasing metal surfaces.

  • Flavors and fragrances: Used as a flavoring agent (FEMA 3537) and fragrance in cosmetics.

  • Other applications: Dispersant for organosol resins, solvent for rubber and waxes, component of fungicidal treatment solutions.

3. Production method:

  • Industrial process: DIBK is obtained as a by-product in the production of methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK). The main synthesis route is catalytic hydrogenation of mesityl oxide, which is obtained by condensation of acetone. The product is purified by rectification to a purity of ≥98–99%.

4. Safety information:

  • Hazard classification: DIBK is classified as a flammable liquid with hazard statements: H226, H319, H335, H336, H351. Signal word: Warning. UN number: 1157 (Class 3, Packing Group III). NFPA 704: Health Hazard 2, Flammability 2, Instability 0. EC Classification: Xi; R: 10-37.

  • Health hazards: Vapors can cause respiratory irritation, coughing, dizziness, headache, and nausea. High concentrations may cause loss of consciousness. Causes eye and skin irritation. Prolonged skin contact may cause dermatitis. Suspected of causing cancer.

  • First aid measures: If in eyes – rinse with water; on skin – wash with water and soap; if inhaled – fresh air; if swallowed – rinse mouth, give activated charcoal, consult a doctor.

  • Fire and explosion hazard: Flammable liquid (flash point 49°C). Above 49°C, vapors can form explosive mixtures with air. In case of fire use foam, powder or CO₂.

  • Storage and stability: Store in tightly closed containers in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place. Shelf life: 24–60 months in sealed original containers.

  • Regulatory compliance: Diisobutyl ketone (CAS#108-83-8, EC#203-620-1) is listed in the EINECS, TSCA, and DSL registries. Regulated by OSHA and ACGIH (TLV: 25 ppm). It is a non-HAP solvent. Approved as a flavoring agent (FEMA 3537) and food additive JECFA (No. 302). For complete information, refer to the Safety Data Sheet (SDS).
