1. Properties:

  • Appearance and physical form: Diethylene glycol monobutyl ether (DEBGE) is a clear, colorless liquid with a weak characteristic butyl odor. It is supplied in various grades (technical ≥99%, reagent, high purity).

  • Solubility: DEGBE is fully miscible with water, ethanol, ether, acetone, and most organic solvents, including benzene and oils. Its dual hydrophilic (alcohol/ether) and lipophilic (butyl) nature allows it to dissolve a wide range of polar and non-polar substances, including nitrocellulose, oils, dyes, resins, and polymers.

  • Chemical properties: DEGBE is a high-boiling glycol ether. It has a boiling point of 230–231°C and a flash point of 99–100°C (closed cup), which makes it a flammable but relatively safe solvent for high-temperature applications. Its slow evaporation rate makes it an effective coalescing agent and leveling agent in coating formulations. Vapors are heavier than air. The substance is chemically stable, but may form explosive peroxides upon prolonged contact with air and reacts with strong oxidizers.

2. Applications:

  • Paints, coatings and printing inks (main): DEBGE is widely used as a coalescing agent (film-forming agent) in water-dispersion paints and emulsion coatings. It dissolves nitrocellulose, alkyd, acrylic, and epoxy resins. It is used in varnishes, drying oils, enamels, stains, and printing inks. It serves as a surface improver for high-temperature enamels..

  • Industrial and household cleaning: DEGBE is a key raw material for industrial and household cleaners, degreasers, paint removers, and metal cleaners. It removes oils, greases, and lubricants from metal surfaces.

  • Chemical synthesis and intermediates: Serves as an intermediate in the production of plasticizers, a dispersant for vinyl chloride resins, as an extraction solvent in pharmaceuticals and as a reagent in organic synthesis.

  • Other applications: Hydraulic brake fluid diluent, emulsion stabilizer, wetting agent, surfactant, solvent in cosmetics and flavorings (FEMA 2362).

3. Production method:

  • Industrial process: DEGBE is produced by reacting ethylene oxide with ethylene glycol monobutyl ether. The product is purified by rectification to a purity of ≥99%.

4. Safety information:

  • Hazard classification: DEGBE is classified as a combustible liquid. Contains hazard statement: H319 (Causes serious eye irritation). Signal word: Attention. NFPA 704: Health hazard 1, Flammability 1, Instability 0. EC Classification: Xi; R: 36.

  • Health hazards: Causes eye irritation. Prolonged skin contact may cause degreasing and dryness. Inhalation of vapors may cause mild respiratory irritation.

  • First aid measures: If in eyes – rinse with water; on skin – wash with water and soap; if inhaled – fresh air; if swallowed – rinse mouth, do NOT induce vomiting, seek medical attention.

  • Fire and explosion hazard: Combustible liquid (flash point 99–100°C). Above 78°C, vapors may form explosive mixtures with air. The substance may form peroxides. In case of fire, use spray water, foam, powder, or CO₂.

  • Storage and stability: Store in tightly closed containers in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place. Shelf life: 24–60 months in sealed original containers.

  • Regulatory compliance: DEGBE (CAS#112-34-5, EC#203-961-6) is listed in the EINECS, TSCA, and DSL registries. Regulated by ACGIH (TLV: 10 ppm). For complete information, refer to the Safety Data Sheet (SDS).
