In pharmaceuticals it binds tablets and pellets, aids dissolution for injection, improves capsule flow, disperses pigments in liquid preparations and stabilises enzymes and heat-sensitive drugs. In cosmetics it acts as a film former, emulsion stabiliser, dispersant for hair colorants and gelling agent in toothpaste. In technical applications it is used as a surface coating agent, dispersant and binder.
