What IEC 60076 is
IEC 60076 is the international standard series for power transformers, prepared by IEC Technical Committee 14. It is not a single document but a group of parts, each covering one technical area — general requirements, temperature rise, insulation, short-circuit withstand, loading, sound levels, dry-type construction and energy efficiency among them.
National standard systems in many countries are based on it, including the GB/T 1094 series in China, which adopts the IEC content with adjustments for local grid conditions.
This modular structure is worth understanding, because a quotation that says "compliant with IEC standard" without naming the parts it was written against has not told you very much.
The parts that come up most often in a tender
Part 1 General. Scope, definitions, service conditions, ratings and the functional
method of specification.
Part 2 Temperature rise for liquid-immersed transformers. The limits applied to
top-oil and winding temperature rise.
Part 3 Insulation levels, dielectric tests and external clearances in air.
Part 5 Ability to withstand short circuit.
Part 7 Loading guide for oil-immersed power transformers. How much overload a unit can
carry, and for how long.
Part 10 Determination of sound levels. Relevant wherever the transformer is installed
close to occupied buildings.
Part 11 Dry-type transformers. Insulation class, temperature rise limits and fire
behaviour for dry-type construction.
Part 12 Loading guide for dry-type power transformers.
Part 16 Transformers for wind turbine applications.
Part 20 Energy efficiency.
Routine, type and special tests — what you are actually buying
This is the distinction that causes the most argument after a contract is signed.
Routine tests are carried out on every unit that ships. They include winding resistance
measurement, voltage ratio and vector group verification, short-circuit impedance and
load loss measurement, no-load loss and no-load current measurement, and the dielectric
routine tests.
Type tests are carried out on a representative unit of a design, not on every unit. They
cover temperature rise and the dielectric type tests, including lightning impulse.
Special tests are carried out only when specified. They include sound level measurement,
short-circuit withstand, harmonic measurement and determination of transient
characteristics.
The practical consequence: the routine test report is the document you should receive with
each shipment, because it describes the unit you are actually receiving. If a tender asks
for "a test certificate" without saying which category it means, clarify it before
awarding — the three categories differ substantially in cost and lead time.
Energy efficiency, and the European market
IEC TS 60076-20:2017 provides guidance on energy efficiency levels for power transformers.
Where a national or regional regulation is in force, it takes precedence over general
standard compliance.
For projects in the European Union, Commission Regulation (EU) 2019/1783 sets maximum loss
levels for small, medium and large power transformers placed on the EU market, with the
EN 60076 series as the harmonised standards. In practice this means "IEC compliant" on its
own is not enough for an EU project: the no-load and load loss figures have to meet the
level the regulation requires for that transformer category.
Four things worth confirming before you order
One. Which parts of IEC 60076 the offer is written against, and which edition.
Two. The loss figures, stated separately for no-load and load loss, and the efficiency
level they correspond to.
Three. The scope of tests: routine only, or type tests included, and whether third-party
inspection is required.
Four. The service conditions the design assumes — maximum ambient temperature, altitude,
and whether correction factors have been applied for either.
It is also worth settling documentation at the same time: the language of the nameplate and
the language of the test reports and drawings. On international projects these are
frequently discovered to be a problem only when the documents arrive.
