Solar Shades, Keep the View, Lose the Glare

A fine screen mesh stops most solar heat and UV before it reaches the glass — while the view outside stays exactly where it was.

Overview

Solar Shades, in detail

Solar shades are specified by openness: the percentage of the weave that is open. A 1% fabric is nearly solid and stops most heat; a 10% fabric lets the view through almost untouched.

From inside, the mesh reads as a tinted window. From outside during the day, it reads as a mirror — which is why solar shades are the standard choice for street-facing offices and glass-fronted homes.

  • Openness 1%, 3%, 5% and 10% in stock
  • Cuts solar heat gain, so air conditioning runs less
  • Daytime privacy without losing the view
  • UV protection for floors, furniture and artwork
  • Exterior-rated mesh and motors for pergolas

Measuring

Measuring made simple

Solar shades are usually mounted outside the recess so the mesh catches sun before it reaches the glass — that is where the heat saving actually comes from.

Width

Opening plus 70 mm each side, or full wall width.

Drop

From the cassette to the floor or sill, minus 10 mm.

Reveal

Allow 70 mm for the cassette and brackets.

Good to know. On a west-facing facade, mount the cassette 100 mm above the opening so the shade can drop past the frame and stop low sun.

Care

Looking after your solar shade

Maintenance

  • Dust the mesh with a soft brush or vacuum on low suction.
  • Wash with water and mild soap; rinse and let it hang dry.
  • Never scrub the weave — it distorts the openness.
  • In coastal areas, rinse exterior shades monthly to remove salt.

Warranty and spares

  • 5 years on mesh and mechanism
  • UV-stable coating tested to 1,000 hours
  • Mesh replaceable on existing hardware
FAQ

Common questions

Which openness should I choose?

3% suits most living spaces. Choose 1% for west-facing offices and screen walls, 10% where the view matters most.

Do solar shades work at night?

With interior lights on, the mirror effect reverses and people outside can see in. For evening privacy, pair with a second layer or choose a darker, denser weave.

Can they be used outdoors?

Yes — our exterior-rated mesh and motors are designed for pergolas, balconies and shopfronts.

Will they stop all heat?

They stop most direct solar gain, particularly at 1–3% openness. They do not insulate like a cellular shade, so the two are often combined.

Can they be motorised?

Yes, with battery, solar-charged or hardwired motors.

Do they block the view completely?

No. Even at 1% you can see shapes and light outside; at 10% the view is nearly clear.
